Bio

Life has been wonderful for the past 6 years, I have been doing what I love and passionate about. It has brought me to places like South Africa, India and Bangladesh. I did not go to a film school but I am self-taught by studying the works of others. Serving in the church media ministry has been one of my early day training grounds.

I live in the beautiful island of Penang, Malaysia with my wife who is a fantastic video editor. I have filmed and edited weddings and documentaries. I also founded and run an establish and cool brand called Wedding Story and has been featured in The Star Newspaper.

I hope to share my life, work and experience on this blog to those who has interest in videography/filmmaking.

2009: I am thankful for…

Its coming to the end of 2009 in a few days time. 2009 has been a year that I have learnt so much about life, business and friends. Its also the year that I have made many new friends in the wedding industry. I also had my fair share of challenges and struggles. Despite challenges and struggles, I choose to be thankful for the things I have and have gone through.

I am thankful for…

1. My family

We moved back to stay with my mom since October 2009. It wasn’t an easy decision but it was something right to do. I now can look after the home I grew up in and care for my mom. Coming home has enable us to spend more quality time with my brother and their family as well. Its wonderful to be able to see the nieces and nephews around in the house despite the high noise level they make.

I learned to cherish my family and love them more. They are so important to us.

2. My wife

She is one strong lady. Whatever areas that I am lacking of, she fills them up. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for her dedication and sacrifice. She has taught me to be more patient with things in life and giving me the occasionally surprise wakeup call about things in life. 2009 is our 3rd year in our marriage and I pray that I will learn to be equally patient with her and understand her more for many years to come.

3. My KopiBen Gang

Without these people, life would be really just work and no fun. When I am not on assignment on Sundays, I look forward to spend great time with these guys over food, games and movies. They were the ones that cheer me up when times are challenging and they are also the ones who gives the nudge to get me moving forward.

4. Friends in KL

5. Our equipments, new and old

6. Clients

7. Opportunity to shoot in Bangladesh

8. Business knowledge

Most importantly, I am thankful to God for He is the author of my life. He is my creator and my Abba Father. I thank Him for giving His son on the cross for me.He is on my side no matter what happens.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas 2009!

The Wedding of Sherine & Jean-Louis, Muar

This wedding marks our first time in Muar. I have always thought that Muar would be a sleepy hollow. I imagine it to be laid back and quiet. Boy I was proven wrong when we arrive into town. My eyes were opened “BIG-BIG”. Muar is a bustling and happening town. I don’t know why but I reckon Muar is like Alor Setar. One thing caught my eye while passing by houses in Muar was the length of the TV antenna. I couldn’t stop noticing them and thinking why is it that high. Finally, the thought of Singapore came to mind. You see, Muar is situated in northern Johor. Across Johor is Singapore. So, in order for these “Muarians” to get reception of Singapore TV channels, the antenna has to be high. Smart people! So does that mean I also could lengthen my house TV antenna and hope that I could get reception of Thai TV channels? Enough about these antenna, back to the title of this post.

Sherine is born in Muar and is currently a music teacher in Singapore. On the other hand, JL who hails from France works in Shell Singapore. It was our first time meeting them over dinner right before the church rehearsal. They are such wonderful friendly people and very hospitable too. JL reminds me of a French church-mate I had back in EPCC. The thing I kept noticing was the occasional use of “LAH” in his vocabulary when talking to his friends from Malaysia and Singapore at the dinner. Try thinking French accent + LAH. :)

The wedding day was simple and lovely. It all started with Sherine getting ready at home. JL and gang came by later to get the bride according to the Chinese “teasing of the groom” games. Then off they go to the church for the solemnization ceremony. At the church, I had a little bit of challenge with the church as they did not allow us to get a live feed from the audio mixer. So, I had to improvise along the way by sticking a wireless mic on the audio speaker. After the church ceremony, there was a luncheon and then the tea ceremony. Later that evening, the reception dinner was a simple but memorable one.

Here’s the Wedding Video Highlight that my wife, Sharon edited.

Learn to be a visual storyteller!

Basic Videography Workshop

Hey everyone. The workshop now has 6 person confirm attending. However, I just want to talk a little bit more about this workshop. Hopefully to get you readers interested to come for it too!

Ever since the introduction of digital cameras, digital photography has become a hit. Nearly everyone (or some) owns a digital camera. Oh, not forgetting those cell phone that has digital camera capability. Basically everyone can take a picture. Those who wants to be better at their photography go further by attending workshops like one of these.

On the same note, digital camcorders available in the market is better compared to the days when I first bought mine. Today, I have a Panasonic TZ7 point and shoot camera that has a HD capability video mode and tapeless! Oh, did I tell you that the image quality is just unbelievable for a camera priced at RM1.3K? Not forgetting those amazing DSLR video that has storm the internet, which has made a big impact on the video industry. Yes, the digital video age has come to a new level.

However, having a killer camcorder or DSLR that has video capability does not make you instantly the next Steven Spielberg or George Lucas. Even Grace and Sharon had to spend 3 years in film school to learn the art of filmmaking. I had to spend the last 6 years of my career to learn on my own. The process of learning is steep and there will be parts that involves technical understanding.

So, you have that killer camcorder and DSLR? Wanna learn to shoot great awesome movie for your family or fun? Come for the workshop to get you started!

What will you learn from the workshop?

1. Understanding your camcorder
2. Basics: Composition, Shot types, Sequences, Action, Directing

Run For The Nation 2009 (RunNat)

Yesterday, Sharon and I was participants of the RunNat 2009 for the Penang state. It was drizzling and there were lots of cars on the road. But it did not deter us from running and praying. The team took 20 mins to reach their destination.
